What is a legal nurse consultant?
A Legal Nurse Consultant, or LNC, is the bridge between the medical and legal disciplines.
As these nurses collaborate with attorneys, their experience and research abilities enable them to competently navigate through medical records and define the standards of care. An LNC can organize this information and help determine the sequence of events in a patient’s treatment. Additionally, LNCs help interpret medical information and terminology. Other responsibilities include working with the attorneys to form legal strategies as well as identifying/interviewing witnesses and experts.
One of the main advantages of hiring an LNC is that they are a practical and cost-effective option. While often confused with paralegals, LNCs not only have the ability to organize information and perform research but they can also give the attorneys a medical perspective that can only be acquired by working in the field.
